Stone Gates & Wild Gorge Boat Trip
Hřensko, Česko
Two countries, two natural stone gates, one unforgettable day! This tour takes you to some of the most iconic spots of the Czech and Saxon Switzerland National Parks – including Europe’s largest natural sandstone arch and a magical boat ride through a narrow gorge.
What to expact:
In the morning, we begin our adventure in Hřensko, the lowest point in the Czech Republic. From here, we hike up to the majestic Pravčická gate – the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe.
Next, we move to the village of Mezná, where we enjoy a hearty lunch in a local restaurant. Recharged, we descend into the mystical Wild Gorge and glide through the canyon on a boat along the Kamenice River.
After emerging from the depths of the forest, we cross into Germany. Our final destination is the impressive Kuhstall (“Cow Gate”) – the largest natural arch in Saxon Switzerland, reached by a scenic trail with rocky stairs and hidden passageways.
Total lenght 11,1km/6,9 miles.
Difficulty: medium
Elevation gain: 731 m
Are you ready for a full-day adventure?
To enjoy the experience to the fullest, please note that this is a full-day trip. The route includes hills and some challenging sections.
That said, anyone in reasonable physical condition can complete it – a bit of persistence is all it takes.
We recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes and bringing a waterproof jacket.
Your guide can lend you a raincoat or trekking poles at the start of the trip.
Pravčická Gate
The majestic sandstone arch, standing 16 meters high and 27 meters wide, is the largest natural rock gate in Europe. The best views are from the surrounding viewpoints, where you can truly appreciate its grandeur. This landmark is the gateway to a world of breathtaking rock towns, romantic rivers, peaceful valleys, and charming villages.
Wild Gorge
This dramatic canyon of the Kamenice River is framed by cliffs rising up to 150 meters. The descent into the cool, shaded valley is an unforgettable experience. Part of the gorge can be explored on foot, and part by a short boat ride that reveals hidden corners you can’t reach any other way.
Kuhstall
One of the highlights along the Malerweg (Painter’s Trail), Kuhstall is the second-largest natural sandstone arch in the region, right after Pravčická Gate. It’s a place where dramatic rock formations meet centuries of history and art.
💡 Did you know? In 2022, a major wildfire affected parts of Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland. While some areas were damaged, nature’s resilience is already visible — you’ll see for yourself how the forest is regenerating and bursting back to life.
