This full-day tour blends breathtaking views, dramatic sandstone landscapes, and the unique atmosphere of traditional Saxon villages. From the legendary Bastei Bridge to the dramatic Schrammstein Rocks and the storybook village of Schmilka – this trip is perfect for those who love both nature and culture.
What to expact:
We begin the day in the picturesque village of Kurort Rathen, reached by a short ferry ride across the Elbe River. From there, we hike to the spectacular Bastei Bridge – one of the most iconic viewpoints in all of Europe. Along the way, enjoy sweeping views over the Elbe Valley, a river that begins in the Czech Republic and flows through Germany.
Around midday, we enjoy a peaceful lunch break in nature with our tasty lunch packs.
Then we travel by car (approx. 30 min.) to the starting point for the second part of the hike – the trail to the Schrammstein viewpoint. This section is more demanding, with steep steps and ladders, but rewards you with awe-inspiring views of jagged sandstone peaks stretching into the horizon.
The day ends in the charming village of Schmilka, known for its half-timbered houses, working watermill, and organic brewery. We’ll treat ourselves to a delicious slice of cake – sweet or savory – from the local bakery and soak in the relaxed, magical atmosphere of this hidden gem.

Are you ready for a one-day adventure?
This trip takes a full day and involves a moderate to demanding hike, including stairs and ladders. The terrain is hilly and can be challenging in places, but it’s manageable for anyone in good physical condition.
We recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes and ideally a waterproof jacket.
Your guide can lend you a raincoat or trekking poles at the start of the trip.
Bastei Bridge
One of Saxon Switzerland’s most famous landmarks, the Bastei Bridge spans 76 meters over the dramatic Mardertelle ravine, linking the Bastei rock formation with the Neurathen Rock Castle ruins. From here, sweeping views of the Elbe River and surrounding sandstone cliffs will leave you speechless.
Schrammstein Peaks
To the east of Bad Schandau rises the jagged Schrammstein massif – a striking ridge of weathered sandstone, split by deep rock gates known as the Schrammtore. These dramatic formations are a testament to millions of years of natural sculpting.
Schmilka Village
Nestled along the Elbe, this tiny half-timbered village feels like stepping back in time. Its historic mill from 1665 still grinds flour for the organic bakery next door, where wood-fired ovens bake bread and cakes each morning. The village also boasts a craft brewery, riverside cafés, and a cozy, authentic atmosphere.

Short ferry ride across the Elbe River to the charming spa town of Kurort Rathen.
Scenic hike to the iconic Bastei Bridge, one of Europe’s most famous viewpoints. We’ll explore the bridge, enjoy breathtaking views of the Elbe Canyon, and then continue down through the peaceful rock path of Schwedenlöcher back to Rathen.
We take the ferry back across the Elbe River and enjoy a picnic lunch on the original bank.
Drive to the starting point for our next adventure and hike to the dramatic Schrammsteine cliffs. The views from here are truly unforgettable.
Descent into the picturesque riverside village of Schmilka. Enjoy a freshly baked cake from the local organic bakery, while I pick up the car.

Our yesterday trip to Bestei and Schrammstein was excellent! Well guided, well organized, amazing and unusuall wievs, local food, informal atmosphere. Although we were in wild nature we felt safe all the time!
